Hair Files: Ramble on Hair Colors + poll

By icyabstract · February 3, 2010 · 17 Comments ·

A bit of a premature entry since I don't plan to color my hair till maybe March, but I have already been planning or thinking about my next hair color.
This entry is going to be rather rambly, coupled with a poll so if you don't wish to read, just look at the pictures to get a gist of it, scroll down and cast your vote.

Sometimes I think I really shouldn't be playing around with coloring my hair this much seeing as it can be damaging in the long run, but I keep re-assuring myself that sometime down the road, I'll revert to black hair and stay that way. Don't know how that would work out, but we'll see.

A quick foreword, I intend to DIY the color since it's just that much cheaper for hair my length. And while I like going to a salon I find that sometimes they tend to persuade me out of what I want, which defeats the whole point of being experimental, no? So unless I want streaks or an expert opinion, I usually prefer DIY-ing it. And it's more fun. My box dye of choice is the Revlon ColorSilk box dyes, so that's where I browsed my color choices from. I find that works good for my hair and I love the smell of the conditioner.

So I have mentioned this before, and that is I am considering to color my hair a lighter shade. Something along the lines of a dirty blonde shade. I have always wanted my hair to be this shade of a blonde:

But I am assuming it could possibly be too light for my face shape/structure, and there is also the fear of it turning golden on me.
Still, it is such a pretty shade.. do you think I could pull it off? Though when the roots grow out it's going to be such a pain...

So anyway, my mental definition of the dirty blonde shade I would get is somewhere along the lines of these colors:

I know these seem more like a light brown then blonde, but I guess this is as light as my hair would go. I'm thinking I might try using a shade like #81 Light Blonde to achieve this, seeing as most bleaching agents in box dyes aren't incredibly color lifting. Though maybe #73 Champagne Blonde might do the trick too.

I'm super jealous of how Hong Ki managed to get his hair that platinum

Though I can imagine how much of a pain (literally!) it would be to color and re-touch the hair. Bleaching so often isn't fun for the scalp at all.

Aside from trying out blonde, a part of me kind of wants to get red hair again. I probably don't have to show you guys examples because I had reddish hair for a good couple of months last year. But still, this is the sort of red or auburn I want to get:

I think that Ashlee Simpson has the most perfect shade of red, I absolutely love her hair!

Though I have been rather tempted to get it as light as Jessica from SNSD in this picture:

I think this shade is more like #72 Strawberry Blonde which I did experiment with awhile back and you can see it here.

But red/auburn isn't something I am new to, I just really like the color so I am thinking to get back to it. For those who haven't see it before, this was how I looked when I first got my hair colored red/auburn back in December 2008

Candid expression ftw~

I first had this red done at the salon, cause it's red I figured I should use some professional advice on it. But after that visit I had been maintaining the color with #45 Bright Auburn from the Revlon line. I find the Revlon color is very similar to what the salon gave me.

So yes... internal debate on that matter. And as if that is not enough I feel like being experimental and trying out Burgundy shades. (#48 Burgundy)
Logically, it's just me being curious because I don't think that I would actually like burgundy shades very much. The color itself isn't bad, it's just I don't think I would like it on me. Here's an example of what I think Burgundy might look on:

Girl on the left. Looking at it, it looks like the color my mom used to have...

So... I don't know about that one. It's kind of a little dark on, though I love the purple-ish hue it has under certain lighting. I can imagine it being a little hard to find a suitable brow product though. The photo here doesn't have as much purple as the Revlon box dye one seems to have. However this color is just a passing thought, I'm still more inclined to the first two colors.

I know a number of you all do prefer my current hair color although it has faded and lightened to a random I don't know what shade anymore. My philosophy is that I will eventually revert to darker shades (maybe even black!) when I get older, so why not try out some lighter shades while I still can. Though I am not talking about Scene hair colors because I kind of hate the maintenance of those.

So let me know which you prefer and what you think about i!. Though that might not entirely influence my final decision as I can get quite spontanous when I am standing in the isle at Watsons. haha. But right now I am quite torn between the first two shades.
If you have any random color suggestions, feel free to elaborate on it too.

Kudos to you if you had read the ENTIRE entry.
Thanks so much for reading and listening to my nonsense!

The big question... what color do you reckon I go for?

Yeap, i read the entire entry! Have you tried Phyto Colour by the plant-based brand, Phyto? They have a good range of colours and its supposedly got only 2% ammonia =)

cocomotion: Yay! Thanks for reading dear (: Nope I've never tried it out though I think I've heard about it.. I think the only reason I'm a little hesitant to try out other brands is because I'm afraid the color pay-off might not be as good. But I will look into it, lesser ammonia = yay. Laughing out loud

Have you tried Liese bubble hair colour ? My friends have been using it, and they love it cause it gives them the exact colour they want . They even have a colour template for different colour hair on the side of the box. XD

Anyway, there's this really good 'makeup' store [well, they sell more bath items and an assortment of other misc items than makeup] at Katong Shopping centre ?? It's wholesale, so the items there are cheaper by quite a bit. Check it out , it's called Rey-im if i'm not wrong XD

Iliaric: It seems I've been hearing mixed reviews about that Liese product. From what I know, people don't really like it and the color doesn't show up. Hmm.. Maybe it's because I was researching on the Cassis color. Maybe the brown ones show up better.
Oh I see, bargains are always awesome! Thanks for the tip Laughing out loud

I like dirty blonde. Maybe bleach it to platinum, then add more color??
This girl dyed her hair platinum with dye from Sally's!

You'd look hot with platinum blonde hair! haha

lechatn0ir: Aw thanks babe! The video is pretty informative, thank you for linking it. My main fear of going super light is if I do miss a spot, that would be ultra bad. I don't trust anyone else with DIY-coloring. I let my bf do it once and it was a bit botched. haha. As much as I can't see the back of my head, I trust myself better.

I read the whole entry! lolx
I have tried Liese.. it got color alright... but I found out that almost everyone who used liese have almost the same color payoff (Maybe we all use the same shade... but I still find it abit weird... cos we all have different hair tone to begin with.. so even if we use the same shade... the color payoff should also be different right? Sorry I'm rambling! lolx)

Anyway... go for dirty blonde (I always love that type of hair tones.. or slighly greyish green blonde(?) and I think it look good on you with lighter tone... as darker tone might look too heavy on you.

Sara and Chantana: oooh ooh, if you want to see greyish green blonde, look for MAC MA Michelle at Sephora ION; she just did her hair and its a grey-green with her older colour blonde underneath!

everbluec: Yay for reading the whole thing! Laughing out loud
Oh, so the color pigmentation of it is actually quite good? Just wondering, which shade did you try out? I was rather interested in the slightly coppery one. I was thinking of coloring it that, and using bleach on select strands to highlight, but I don't know... researching on dirty blonde hairstyles and how it get it and it's quite troublesome! haha. It's more then just plopping the color on since there's more bleach involved.

I'm thinking of going dirty blonde too... because if I want to go red I can always do it after my roots start growing out. That way the red would be lighter too! haha.

cocomotion: Ooh, that sounds like an amazing color combination! Dropping by town soon, maybe I'll go be a little sneaky around MAC at ION. haha!

wow!!! love the colour inspirations, especially the one of Jessica from SNSD!!! in my opinion, it will look super pretty on you coz its kinda like yr previous red hair colour but with a tinge of blond-ish high and lowlights... yr posts always makes me 'itchy' to do up my hair colour!!! hahaha..

I read the whole thing and I voted 'others'.
Why not go for an in-between?
I think if you really want a light colour, you should totally go for the red/burgundy somewhere in-between.
Red seems to look real good on you.

I feel like if the colour is too light, it washes your face out in pictures, I dyed my hair like super goldish and I looked dead in my photos. LOL.

Or go for a dark black colour with like green in it. Ashlee Simpson did it in her first(?) album and I've been lemming it ever since!

amyrleex: haha go experiment with hair coloring! Laughing out loud Yes Jessica's hair is super pretty, it's like red but quite light at the same time. I think she's got pretty fine blonde highlights running through it to lighten it. I might eventually get that hair color because I'm researching on getting hair a dirty blonde shade and it seems to be safe about not damaging your scalp, there are so many things to note!

Secret lovechild: Ooh yay for reading the whole thing!
Yeah that's my concern too, it being too light and making me look washed out. At the same time I don't want to look ... how'd you say... like odd and just not right with blonde hair, you know. Haha well I have had thoughts of getting my hair black again but I know for sure that the minute I color my hair black, I'll regret it the next day. Plus lifting hair color from black is quite hard, so unless I'm sure I want to go dark I might stick to lighter colors for now.

Hmm, I think burgundy would be a really adventurous choice. I've personally seen many women with hair that's just a little off burgundy and have (slightly odd) purple highlights. You might want to be cautious with that colour, but kudos to you if you can rock it! I read everything too and voted for auburn eventually. Call it safe, but I think that colour has the largest "range" (compared to blondes etc., if you get my drift) and you can always tweak it lighter or darker easily with dye as and when. Smiling

Anonymous Bosch: Haha I know, it's like under sunlight it can just look.... odd. And in a way it reminds me of much older ladies because it seems they like to get their hair that color. So I'm not sure if Burgundy is the way to go. Haha a part of me wants to go Auburn too, and yeap I totally get your drift (:

(On the part of matured ladies) Yes, my sentiments exactly! I didn't quite dare to voice it though, heh. Well, different shades of auburn vary some much but most seem to complement your (medium?) skintone! It's got a wide spectrum and I think you'll be fab with a light creamy-cappuccino brown though. Smiling

Anonymous Bosch: haha one *ahem* example was the fact it was a color my mom had for awhile! Goshhh. I just thought it was cool, but I'm not sure if I want to venture into that shade right now. Maybe when I get older. LOL. Thanks for the shade recommendations! I like light brown shades but my only fear with them (and blonde) is it turning golden with wash. Might have to invest in like a toner or something... idk. Red's fine whichever way since it's warm-hued already. haha.
