Review: Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion

By icyabstract · July 6, 2010 · 15 Comments ·

I am certain the onsugarettes have heard a good amount of raves about the Hada Labo product range that was introduced to Singapore's shores a couple of months back. I was one of those blown away by the positive reviews and ravings and was so keen on getting my hands on the products - namely the Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion. After all, one bottle is sold every four seconds in Japan! And I'm not kidding, it's printed on their product labels.

As if someone read my mind, I had been provided the Hydration Lotion by fr3b.com for reviewing purposes, special thanks to them.

Before I talk about the specific product, I shall mention briefly about Super Hyaluronic Acid for those who might not be informed of it. Super Hyaluronic Acid (SHA) is an ingredient that boasts providing optimum hydration. It is capable of penetrating the skin, hydrating it and at the same time locking in moisture. Aside from that it forms a 'barrier' on the skin to prevent loss of moisture to the environment. A better way of understand that would be through this diagram:

So all products in the Super Hyaluronic Acid contains this key ingredient. Some of you might also be happy to learn that all Hada Labo products do not contain unncessary additives such as alcohol, colorant, fragrances and mineral oil so senstive skin people have no fear!

To those uninformed, although this product is labelled a 'lotion', it is not a moisturizer per se. It is meant to be used after cleansing, which means it is actually a toner in western skincare terms. Although it does not at all function in the exact same way. Comparing the viscosity of this to western toners, it seems to be a slight bit 'thicker' - probably due to the absence of alcohol - but it is still a runny clear liquid.

You can barely see it in the photo but you get the point (:

Here is the instructions on how to use as printed on the back of the bottle:

  • Apply on palms or cotton wool & gently pat on ur face until thoroughly absorbed.

I would recommend using your palms as it makes it easier. Unlike western toners that you swipe across your skin, the purpose of this is to pat it in your skin and allow it to be absorbed.

Probably a strange point to pick out, but I like how the cap of this product feels very firm and the nozzle dispenses well.

It's hard to explain, but in some cases runny toner products tend to drip down the nozzle instead of drip out of the nozzle. In this case, the product goes straight from the nozzle to your palm, no wastage and mess in between and it makes it easier to control the amount you are dispensing.

What do I think of it?
This has certainly not disappointed me. I had fairly high expectations of it after having browsed so many reviews and I must say it truly lives up to all that it was raved to be. Two drops of this toner is enough for my entire face and it doesn't take much to pat it in. I would drip two drops on my palms, rub them together and start patting it all over my face. The product is easy to work with and just as it is about to completely be absorbed it gets a slight bit tacky. That feeling lasts for less then a minute and instantly you are left with supple and hydrated skin. I think this works amazingly well with Singapore's weather as it does not leave a greasy feel yet moisturizes the skin sufficiently at the same time. When I sleep in air-conditioning I find that I still have to top it off with a moisturizer (probably because my skin tends to need more hydration), but otherwise I love using this alone during the day!

To read more, see how Hazel has multiple uses for her Hydrating Lotion. Also, along with her review Chantana had included the recommended method of patting the Lotion in - which I get too lazy to follow, but I do sometimes!

This product is available at Watsons for S$22.90

Overall Rating: Fail / Pass / Merit / Distinction / High Distinction

Hi Sara, nice review! I was just wondering though, is it ok to use another moisturizer after the HL lotion? I'm currently using Garnier Aqua Defense moisturizing gel. What do you think?

i hate the freebie website, because my sister is also a member and since she already registered our address, so everytime i tried getting a sample, they said that our address is already stored in their system, so i can't get it Sad i emailed them over several occasions but didnt hear any reply from them. Haha, seems not bad a product but i'm going use up my laneige's toner first before buying this Laughing out loud

Does it help in refining the pores?

everbluec: I can slowly feel Hada Labo taking over my skincare routine! haha, will have to check the milk out.

annalim: Yes yes go get it! It's really nice to use!

aizutto: Try it out soon! Though if you can find a bottle or something to transfer the product too it would be best. I've tried a sample satchet before and dispensing is from the satchet was always a bit messy.

zuuwithlove: Thank you and I hope you find it helpful! And yes you can most certainly use a moisturizer after if you feel that you need that extra hydration. I do top this off with a moisturizer at night just before bed for that extra hydration since I sleep in an air-conditioned room.

teaplayground: Ohh shucks yeah they do monitor that right. Hm, hope they get back to you about it soon! Or else I could also bring it up to the fr3b representative that contacted me asking if there is someone we can contact for an immediate response. Let me know and I can email her, just give me both your usernames and I can ask.

hazelnutt: That and you're ready to go when running errands. Sounds like a great fuss-free and quick routine! (: And no problem, your post was really helpful.

kate yeo: It doesn't claim to help with pore minimizing and refining and I can't monitor that well because I don't have an issue with pores but it does make the skin surface a lot smoother after use.

Hada Labo is fantastic - For my dehydrated skin. I got the sample from fr3b too, and bought the bottle right after. Finally, a much much cheaper alternative to my Cle De Peau Beaute hydrating lotion. It can be used for your eyes too, unlike American brand tomers. Very good to improve fine lines, which maybe isn't an issue for most of you gals. : )

MariAsh: Yeap I agree with all that you've said about the product, it's certainly a great find and for the price!

roseannetangrs: Ohh you should definitely check this out or grab a sample to try it. It's different from any other toner I've tried! There isn't any alcohol at all so it doesn't dehydrate the skin. I would definitely recommend for you to give it a shot, I don't think this one would break you out.
