Review: LG Optimus One!

By icyabstract · October 27, 2010 · 69 Comments ·

As mentioned earlier, here is the review of the LG Optimus one! I had been sponsored this phone as part of the LG Life's Good Ambassador Challenge I am taking part in and this post marks the start of the 7 week long event!

Yes, it's 7 weeks long, but I shan't go into too much detail about the Challenge here, will update on that later on.

I did a video review about the phone it would be easier to showcase it that way and it sure beats me rambling on about it with words. The video is a little long at 14 minutes, but I have tried cutting it down loads already (as always).

Eventually the unboxing scene did not make it in the final cut but I might compile some of the outtakes and cut scenes into one unofficial video at a later date, but right now do check the review out!

Here are some photos of the box contents, phone etc.

Contents of the box.

Now for some shots of the phone.

From afar the phone's casing looks like a pure black shade but if you look super closely, you will see some very fine silver specks. It's hardly noticeable though.

And a rough anatomy of the phone.

One content I had to cut out from the review video was where I mentioned the backing of this phone is actually a little dificult to remove. In a way it's tight and sturdy so you don't have to worry about it falling out when you drop it, but if your nails are painted or if you have super short nails, it might be a little tougher?

My brother opening the backing for me.

But this is how it opens

Not sure how my very first tech/digital review went but I sure hope this was helpful and insightful! As mentioned in this video, I probably didn't cover every aspect of the phone as there is loads to say. Follow me through my weekly updates with this campaign and within some posts I would talk more/highlight certain features etc!

I would need all your help and support with this LG voting thing. I'll be posting information about it but if you can work your way around, you can start voting already! (: If you're not sure how it works you can start by liking the LG Mobile Asia page and wait for my follow-up post! Much much thanks in advance (:

Thank you all for reading/watching!

hello! i'm thinking of buying this phone. could you comment on the easy of sending messages and emails, as well as the battery life? am thinking of using it as my work phone in hospital. thank you Sticking out tongue

binhuitan: Ooh I cut the battery bit out of the video? Shucks my bad, here's the info you are wondering about:

It's super easy to send messages and the messages work like the iPhone, stored in a conversation styled window and filed according to contacts. So all your text messages to 'person A' will be under the 'person A' tab and once you click on it the entire conversation since the very first text to the person will show up. You can delete the entire conversation or choose to delete text by text, up to you (: Emails are really easy too, sync your email account and you can compose a new mail, attach files with ease.

Battery life is quite average, not the best but kind of okay. If you were to excessively use the phone it would probably last one day, depending on the application maybe even slightly lesser. If you use the apps/wifi/3g in moderation and otherwise call/sms, it can last maybe 1 1/2 - 2 days. It is chargeable via laptop so all you need is the date cable.

Hi thanks for the review.

I would like to know, if is possibile, is there a Stopwatch or similar ??
Meaning like a countdown( or count up) in the clock app. function ?

Cause i really need a cellpfone with that feature.

Thank you for your answer

Riccardo - ITALY: I've tried looking and it doesn't seem the phone itself has this function however there are loads of stopwatch applications in the Andriod market that you can easily download with WiFi (or data plan) and they are free of charge (;

Hi,
Thanks for the review.

How did you find typing/texting? I've read that the keys are very narrow and it makes it difficult to text.

Thanks. Smiling

Anonymous: Hi there. This is my first time using a touch screen phone so I guess it's inevitable that I have to get used to typing either ways. I personally find it okay, but maybe because I haven't much experience with touch screen typing from before.

@Riccardo no worries am sure simple application like Stopwatch is out there in android market with nearly over 100K application to choose from. It wont be so bad that you will not have Stopwatch application Smiling

FIY i did a search using 'stopwatch' as a keyword in the market. there is plenty of it.

Hi, thanks for the great review ^_^

I am wondering as Adobe Flash can't be installed on this phone due to it's low 600mhz processor, have you tried the Skyfire browser from the Android Market and if so what's it like to stream videos?

posted by

Neostar: I haven't tried the Skyfire browzer just yet but are you looking to stream videos from youtube or?

Hi Sara ^_^

I was asking about streaming videos from other flash sites like Pyontube, Crunchyroll, Veoh etc. Skyfire is an interesting app but from my test on a different phone it's slow and videos are blocky.

It's real a shame as I like this phone and the LG brand but the lack of a Flash Lite 3 plugin will disappoint a lot of people and I really wished that LG added this;;

Hi
am planning to buy this phone but bit confused, being a smart phone if it supports basic things like saving msg in inbox , outbox then drfting msg. Call records. I mean it shud be handy when talk about basics.

Hey and ya I have few questions also:

1. Adobe flash 10.1 support: I checked out few videos of P500 where some people say its there and some says its not. Can you plz clear my doubt if its there or not.

2. USB port: This mobile has mini USB port. It could be silly but I wanna know that can we access pen drive on this mobile through this USB port if we use a supported cable?

Anonymous: Aw thank you (:

JordanDD: Like tethering? Well if you have a Data plan already then you don't have to pay extra, it runs on your data plan.

Aju Krishnan: No problem! Glad it was of help (:

Andrew knott: For me I do get a prompt on several web pages asking me to install or upgrade my flash. I can't remember which it was but it does not work for say the Facebook video player. As for the USB port, yes you can access pen drive just by connecting the USB data cable from your phone to a computer, the phone also charges while you do that.

hi 1 quick question!

i'm not intending to get a data plan.

will the calender still work? from what i saw at the lg shop, the calender seems to require gmail or microsoft exchange.

thanks so much! Smiling)

Anonymous: I was using the Nokia E71 prior to this and I would say if you like surfing, without a doubt the LG is a better option, though Nokia seems to work a little faster at Email syncing. It takes awhile to refresh and sync the email on LG but there seems to be more options on the interface. As the LG is a touch screen, it definitely makes surfing easer because you can just click wherever, tap to zoom and and out etc. While surfing on Nokia you'll have to scroll with the navigational pad.

Going to buy soon! : Yeap the calender will still work, as in the normal application. You can sync it to your gmail and update it when you have wifi access but it will still be operating and all.

Hi, Its a very nice review. Great job. It included all basic information required about the phone.
I have a skype account. Can we install Skype to make Voice Calls.

posted by

diyana rahim: Yeap that's possible. The LG phone has it's own youtube application so it makes it easier as well.

Sandy007: I've never tried video calling with Skype on the phone but yes you are able to install the Skype application. Thanks (: Glad you liked the review.

Thank you for the reply. Just wanted to know about the basic Voice calls from Skype. I do have a Skype paid account. I need to use a Mike and a head set while making calls from a pc. So just wanted to know if we can make voice calls by logging on to skype while on internet.

Thanks

Hi Sara,
Thank you. Within new year. I am planning to buy a mobile. Either Optimus one or Samsung Galaxy 3. Have you used Galaxy 3. Both have almost same reviews.

posted by

Sandy007: Hi there (: Nope I haven't tried the Samsung Galaxy though so I can't say much about it. From personal experiences with past Samsung phones (not this one) I don't really like how their phones work and it didn't seem extremely responsive. Though don't take my word for it as the Galaxy 3 is a new model (:

Hi Sara,
No problem. Thanks for your reply. Have tried Galaxy 3. The Capacitive Screen is very much responsive than LG. No problem. Will check out. Thanks again.
