Thy Culprit? (Any Moisturizer Recommendations?)

By icyabstract · February 5, 2010 · 35 Comments ·

So a bit of background knowledge before I start on a probable accusation.

The Pre-Makeup moisturizer I am using right now is by Kawaii Tokyo and it's their Brighten-Up Gel product. I had bought this a long while back and was actually using this before I had been given a sample of Elizabeth Arden's Prevage during their workshop to test out. I am alternating the Kawaii Tokyo with my Prevage Day sample. We were given the full-sized product of Prevage as well, but that I gave to my mom because long story short I noticed some (good) effects of Prevage for the first couple of weeks, but is it possible for effects to just... stop showing up? I don't know. I figured my mom might benefit from it better so I gave that to her.

But back to this!
So here's the moisturizer in question:

And this comes in two types I believe, the one I have is the Herbal Forest one.
I think the other is something Citrus... or Citrus something.

I've been using this and loving it because it just feels great on. Has a slight peculiar scent (read: not horrid or bad, just peculiar) which is said to be camphor, something that helps rejuvenate the body and skin. Not sure about that, but after using it a of couple times the scent doesn't bother me. In short, I really liked this product as it's said to help combat the following inevitable skin damages.

(taken from a manual enclosed with the product - click to enlarge if you want to read!)

So the revolutionary (and sad) discovery I just made is that this product contains Marine Collagen.

WHY?! ):

This could explain why I have been breaking out for a pretty long period and regardless of what I do it just wouldn't go away. I cannot say that it is 100% caused by this, but I am suspecting that it is? All past experiences of mine with Marine Collagen or Fish Oil have not been very good. From BB Creams (that I had discussed recently) to ingested vitamins, my skin just hasn't reacted very well to it and I suspect it might be the case here as well.

A little fyi: though not applicable for all cases, it's said that people with eczema are more prone to reacting badly to Marine Collagen; like shellfish it's something we should not have too much of.

So I intend to switch moisturizers for awhile (say a month or so) and see if this product is truly the cause for the mess on my skin right now.

Meanwhile, I do wish to know if anyone has good pre-makeup moisturizer recommendations?
I know pre-makeup moisturizers can be anything from Hazeline Snow to La Mer, as long as it works! I thought it'll be interesting to share as I've realized when it comes to moisturizers and skincare, I haven't tried many or don't know of many good ones and haven't found a HG one either.

I am eyeing some Etude House items (see Kas! Your influence on me is sooo deep, haha) but we'll see. I am still keeping my fingers crossed that the Kawaii Tokyo product isn't the one that is causing this.

So share the pre-makeup moisturizer or even night moisturizer that you use!
My night moisturizer is running out too and I'm thinking of trying something else out.

I normally use Biotherm Biopur SOS moisturizer.. but recently(since Dec).. I have been using Garnier Aqua defence!

Biotherm one is just a moisturizer to prevent acne, fading it and also calm my face. (I love that.. but since I didn't have alot of break out now.. I stop using it for awhile and try to concentrate on Moisturizing products)

I love Garnier aqua defense!! Very moisturizing and it make my face feel really really smooth! And what best was that it didn't cause any breakout! (It's really cheap.. think about SD$14.90?) I'm almost finishing the Jar... and I'm going to try Maybelline next! hee hee (if maybelline didn't work.. I'm jumping back to Garnier! lolx)

oh my gosh, good thing you found that out!! You know what moisturiser i'm using (biotherm) and i can say it works!

everbluec: Skincare expert! haha. Thank you so much for the breakdown. I've heard so much about Biotherm, though I don't know about Garnier. Because I have used Garnier like way before in secondary school and I remember it being a little drying on my skin. I think times have changed and products have been reformulated so it's probably worth looking into. Thanks again! Laughing out loud

roseannetangrs: Yes, thankfully! haha. I'm actually thinking to maybe try that Biotherm one out as a night moisturizer since it's on the thicker side. It sounds very amazing in your review entry!

hmm i've been using egyptian magic in combination with clinique's dramatically dramatizing lotion (great stuff!!) and they've worked really well for my dry skin. i also have eczema so i get red blotches a lot and my skin is really sensitive. as for the pre-makeup moisturizer (i assume you mean primer?) i use tarte's clean slate. i love that tarte uses predominantly natural ingredients and is also soothing for my sensitive skin.

Sara: Waaahh - got honourable mention within the post!!!! LOL! I actually am finishing up my Etude House O2 Moisturiser (runs and hides) - i only need a little and it is light enough, yet moisturising. Im happy with it, but am thinking of trying a new one when it runs out (I'm dredging it already). another one i use is the Elizabeth Ardern Intervene Moisture Lotion.

anonimous b: Ohh! I've heard about that egyptian magic cream. It's said to be quite wondrous or something. Wow it's good that it worked out for you. I was thinking to maybe try it but I have no idea where to get it at. It's quite a hard thing to get your hands on I think. As for pre-makeup well yeah sort of a base that moisturizers. I've actually not really heard of the brand Tarte before. I know it exists but I haven't heard of their products, though this sounds quite interesting. Thanks for suggesting!

misschillipadi: Haha, I've heard so much about them but for some weird reason I always had this mentality that Olay would be too rich for my skin. Does it work great for you, is it very thick?

cocomotion: haha yes special mention! I was just browsing around and saw that one too. Apparently Etude House doesn't have as much skincare as I thought they would and they have this other moisturizer called Collagen moisturizer but the word Collagen itself scares me regardless if it's going to be marine collagen or not. Lol. Ooh I've heard about that EA one, but I'm not very familiar with higher end skincare. I think I should be, they all seem to work so well, except I should wait till I get a job first! haha.

Sara: Collagen in makeup doesn't scare me half as much as when i see it in food products - Vita*en Collagen and Nesca*e Collagen 3-in-1 anyone? *shudder* I always envision it going down my throat like silicone and then solidifying somewhere along the way! Talk about wild imagination!

cocomotion: Oh yesss! Omg that too. Shucks man, I always get a very disturbing relation when I hear of collagen in food. I guess in vitamins I don't mind so much, but food?! It's just wrong...

lolx... The Garnier one is the new range.. the green glass jar one. (If I'm not wrong it was released in late 2008, early 2009) ... The older version are the Blue, yellow and red tube one right?? I find those not very impressive especially the yellow one for whitening. But am very impress with the Aqua Defense one!

ohh you can get egyptian magic online on amazon and ebay. it has worked for me by evening out my skin, but not so much for dryness.. that's y i still use clinique. and u should definitely checkout tarte

everbluec: Oh I see, yeap I was talking about the older ones. My mom tried those out too and didn't like them too much either. The new line sounds promising though, would drop by and check them out, thanks!

anonimous b: That's what I was afraid of, I don't know why but I never liked the idea of purchasing from amazon or ebay. I will look around a bit for it though, I'm guessing some people might have purchased from there and are selling it off.

i use the Vichy Normaderm Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care, i finishing my 3rd bottle! my HG day moisturiser!! it dries to a matte smooth finish just nice for primer application and it also helps keeps my face matte and somehow reduces breakouts.

im using the loreal genesis ( cant rmb the spelling), the pore minimiser. its quite light & moisturising enuff for me.

My pre-makeup moisturiser is Simple Day Moisturise - it is really a fuss free, and non irritating product. I just finished my 2nd bottle. It moisturises just so, and not thick or sticky...

thanks for the recc everbluec ! i saw the garnier aqua advertisement and was quite tempted to try it but never really dared! maybe i should..

for me personally i use the body shop's aloe moisturising lotion spf 15. i have pretty sensitive skin and that's fragrance, preservative free and all that. so, it's the only one i use right now.

Yay! Thanks for all the moisturizer recommendations! Definitely a lot more options to choose from and I don't feel so blank when I think about moisturizers now.

Hmm, I'd really recommend the Dramatically Different Moisturizing GEL by Clinique. (Not the more well-known lotion though, 'cause that's oily!) It has a great light-weight formula, is easy and quick to absorb and makes the face feel smooth! I top it off with the Moisture Surge Hydrator for nights though. For a cheaper alternative, I'd second the Simple moisturizer. Smiling

Anonymous Bosch: Oh yes I've heard about that one too, the gel version as the lotion one is said to be a lot thicker. Thanks for your feedback on it! The simple moisturizer seems to be getting some love, I haven't looked into the Simple range a lot, maybe I should.

The only pre-makeup and night moisturizer that works for me is Hazeline Snow. I used some other brands and my face became pimple warzone. -__-

I personally like Shiseido products, as they seem like the only brand i've used that doesn't cause me to breakout like crazy .
I use Shiseido's Pureness Matifying Moisturiser, as a pre-makeup base. Btw, don't ever buy Faceshop moisturisers, they're wayyyyyyyyyy too moisturising. (Read: Causes MAJOR breakouts). Of course, unless you have really dry skin. XD

@mariamaegan: I used the Bodyshop aloe before (I forgotten which one I'm using.. but it was that range)... it's sting my skin abit.. but that was like 2-3 yrs ago(maybe they change the formula or something)

heavenlygorgeous: I actually have one at home and I was so tempted to use that as a moisturizer but the problem is that I had no idea how long I've had this one so it was quite scary to use it on my face. Though I am tempted to get a new bottle to try. I love how it feels when I use it as a normal hand lotion.

Iliaric: Ah I see.. I've never looked into Shseido products before. Thanks for pointing me in a direction! (:

yea man..shiseido skincare is kind of second to none. you should like,go to a counter and try it on your whole face..then shop around and look at the 'effects/conditions' of your face at the end of the day and make your decision..but it's the best pre-makeup moisturizer for me..i've tried kawaii tokyo, made me oily like crazy.haha

It hydrates very well, Im using the Olay Regenerist range. I love it. Smiling If you want I can give you a sample of it! &Maybe I could do a review on it! Laughing out loud

mellymellypoo: Yes maybe I should, I have never ventured to a Shiseido counter before or any Japanese makeup counter for that matter. For the Kawaii Tokyo one, I've always used it as a pre-makeup moisturizer so I never really noticed the oily-effect since I thought it was natural. Thanks for sharing your experiences with it.

misschillipadi: Aw thanks babe, that's super kind of ya, but it's alright I think my mom might just be looking into getting a new moisturizer and she's thinking about the Olay line. Thank you for the offer though! Laughing out loud

haha that's funny, because when i first started using the kawaii tokyo and i was oily,i also thought it's normal and i just had to live with it.but then my school organised this shiseido workshop and i got to try the said moisturizer, and it totally changed my perception.ever since, my lonely kawaii tokyo has been left in the back of the cupboard. but it's not perfect..it is great as under pre-makeup,but for night time i prefer their 'the skincare' line stuff more..origins white tea skin guardian is superawesome too! sorry for rambling, but i am very happy i found shiseido thus i cant really stay calm and not get hyper.haha!

mellymellypoo: Oh don't worry, rambling is good (: Tons of information and experiences! And wow your school organised a shiseido workshop, that's so awesome, just wondering which school do you go to?
My Kawaii Tokyo is in the same fate too. haha.

haha i go to shatec institutes..its a hospitality school and i'm in hotel management. thus the workshop, because they wanted us to learn more about how to take care of our skin, what make up suits our skintone etc

mellymellypoo: Oh I see... cause my school had a Shiseido workshop as well, though I didn't attend it cause I was too busy with classes to sign up for it. haha. The one at my school was optional though. Hotel Management sounds fun, I have a friend or a couple friends at Shatec too, not sure if they've graduated or not..
