Hair Files: And they are out!

By icyabstract · March 21, 2010 · 10 Comments ·

Okay, again I should be doing work... but we all how that usually works out so here's a quick hair update entry.

I posted a teaser photo on my dailybooth, asking you guys if there was a difference in the photo and some people spotted it straightaway (and replied to me on twitter about it).
The difference was that I had taken my hair extensions out!

And the great thing is that I did not have to cut my precious hair off and leave them as little stumps. Instead the boyfriend helped to take the clamped in extensions out with this tool:

Yeah a scary-looking, old and kind of gross plier. But heck, if it does the job...

I also filmed a short footage on how I had my hair extensions removed in case anyone wishes to get this extension method and is worried about the removal or anything like that.

Somehow there's an error and at times the video wouldn't play. Click here to go to the video's youtube page.

It doesn't hurt at all, so don't worry about it! Unless the person that is helping you accidentally pulls your hair or something then I can't save you there... lol. But if done right, you don't feel a thing.

One thing I want to let you guys know is that if you take the extensions out, you will actually see the 'damage' that most people talk about.
It's not that bad because you can actually comb it out, but your hair (just above the clamps) will be very knotted. I am not sure if it is obvious in this photo, but you can see how the hair is all twirled and tangled.

All you need is a little patience to slowly unravel the tangles with your fingers and you'll have 'normal' hair once again. Do know that you might have some stray hairs caught up in that tangled mess. These are strands of hair that have broken off from I don't know where and I'm not sure how, but are being held there because of the tangle and the clamps. Nothing to worry about, I did not notice any incredulous hair fall or hair breakage in my case - Just bits and pieces that are expected.

So now I am left with pretty plain ole brown hair.

I loved the extensions but I'm glad to finally take them out because that means hair cut and color!
I'm still thinking about how layered I want my hair cut to be but I'll probably stick with what I have had all these years. I don't want it to go too short since my graduation is so close by. Screwed up hair on graduation is not pretty at all.

I'm thinking to go dirty blonde for awhile and then go back to red during graduation. Though the idea of coloring my hair so many times in a rather short period sounds very unhealthy to me. I have also made plans to not color my hair all the way till graduation (June) and then have it dirty blonde then.

I don't know, we'll see. I like planning what I need to do with my hair, but at the same time I like being spontaneous about it so we'll let spontaneity decide.

Anyone looking for a new hair cut/color? What are your current hair plans?

Thank you all for reading!

Hair Files: My hair is falling out!

By icyabstract · March 14, 2010 · 12 Comments ·

Well don't worry, I'm not talking about my real hair. Though from the thumbnail you would have probably figured it out.

To this date, I've had my extensions in for close to three months now. If you didn't know that I had extensions, you can start reading about how it all began here. Really it's not a journey, but I thought it'll be more complete. But anyway, as estimated, the extensions are starting to fall out at the three month mark.

Thus far only 2 strands have fallen out, one was at my boyfriend's place so no pictures of that, but this one fell out a couple days ago.

I know, it looks nasty right? The picture is here to just show you how frizzed up it looks.

I did not abuse my hair or anything, it just came out like that. Strange though since when it was on my head it didn't feel tangled. I guess the extensions can stay on for longer then 3 months, since only 2 have fallen out to date and the rest seem to be going on strong. However I am planning to remove them soon. I find that once the hair grow-out hits a certain length, the extensions are annoying to no end.

Why so? Because that 'loop' between your roots and the extension clamp gets larger and larger and there is an increased tendency to tug your hair by accident through that loop. If you are completely lost, here's a visual of how my hair and the clamps look now.

It's pretty far down my head now, compared to before.
Here's a shot that was taken about 3 months ago:

I am not sure what exactly In should update about i terms of findings because it wasn't that far off from having 'normal' hair.

Some main difficulties I faced or had to adapt to would be

  • Washing my hair, since I didn't want to hook the loops, I had to be super gentle.
  • Tie-ing my hair. It's not a problem but I had to be careful not to tie too tightly else it hurt since it'll feel like it's pulling
  • No teasing. For the whole period I've had my extensions in I did not do any backcombing, just because I didn't want to tangle up the extensions hair, that would be a pain.

And well that isn't everything, but that's more or less the main points. Also another thing that people usually mention about hair extensions damaging your hair etc, I've always wondered in what way could that happen. Aside from the slight strain on your scalp due to tugging ot pulling, damage your own hair, how?

Well I've found out that your hair does get incredibly knotted just above the clamps, It's hard to see but try to spot that in this photo:

Do you spot it? It's just a mess of hair tangled together, me thinks...

I think that would be the main things I want to update on about my hair extensions. I'm thinking to end this journey soon, because it is becoming a slight chore to manage and you can start feeling the existence of the extensions. My first thought would be to cut them off just above the clamps, I mean how else can you take them out? But the boyfriend said he wants to use pliers to remove them and he knows how so I'll leave that to him.

Yay to no weird short stubs, if it works out.

I'll do an entry on the removal too. Not sure when I'll do them but it'll definitely be soon. I cannot wait to get my hair all layered and give it a fresh coat of color once more.

If anyone has any questions about extensions do leave it below and I'll answer it from what I know. It's hard to discuss it since everyone has their concerns and I didn't find that I encountered many strange problems that needed addressing.

And one more thing! Hair extensions that are made with real human hair (ask the salon, it's usually real human hair. Scary thought huh!) CAN be styled. During the EA Photoshoot, the hair stylist curled my hair and the curls stayed in place and everything.

Okay that is all, thanks for reading! Leave any questions you may have below and I'll be glad to answer them.

Hair Files: Ramble on Hair Colors + poll

By icyabstract · February 3, 2010 · 17 Comments ·

A bit of a premature entry since I don't plan to color my hair till maybe March, but I have already been planning or thinking about my next hair color.
This entry is going to be rather rambly, coupled with a poll so if you don't wish to read, just look at the pictures to get a gist of it, scroll down and cast your vote.

Sometimes I think I really shouldn't be playing around with coloring my hair this much seeing as it can be damaging in the long run, but I keep re-assuring myself that sometime down the road, I'll revert to black hair and stay that way. Don't know how that would work out, but we'll see.

A quick foreword, I intend to DIY the color since it's just that much cheaper for hair my length. And while I like going to a salon I find that sometimes they tend to persuade me out of what I want, which defeats the whole point of being experimental, no? So unless I want streaks or an expert opinion, I usually prefer DIY-ing it. And it's more fun. My box dye of choice is the Revlon ColorSilk box dyes, so that's where I browsed my color choices from. I find that works good for my hair and I love the smell of the conditioner.

So I have mentioned this before, and that is I am considering to color my hair a lighter shade. Something along the lines of a dirty blonde shade. I have always wanted my hair to be this shade of a blonde:

But I am assuming it could possibly be too light for my face shape/structure, and there is also the fear of it turning golden on me.
Still, it is such a pretty shade.. do you think I could pull it off? Though when the roots grow out it's going to be such a pain...

So anyway, my mental definition of the dirty blonde shade I would get is somewhere along the lines of these colors:

I know these seem more like a light brown then blonde, but I guess this is as light as my hair would go. I'm thinking I might try using a shade like #81 Light Blonde to achieve this, seeing as most bleaching agents in box dyes aren't incredibly color lifting. Though maybe #73 Champagne Blonde might do the trick too.

I'm super jealous of how Hong Ki managed to get his hair that platinum

Though I can imagine how much of a pain (literally!) it would be to color and re-touch the hair. Bleaching so often isn't fun for the scalp at all.

Aside from trying out blonde, a part of me kind of wants to get red hair again. I probably don't have to show you guys examples because I had reddish hair for a good couple of months last year. But still, this is the sort of red or auburn I want to get:

I think that Ashlee Simpson has the most perfect shade of red, I absolutely love her hair!

Though I have been rather tempted to get it as light as Jessica from SNSD in this picture:

I think this shade is more like #72 Strawberry Blonde which I did experiment with awhile back and you can see it here.

But red/auburn isn't something I am new to, I just really like the color so I am thinking to get back to it. For those who haven't see it before, this was how I looked when I first got my hair colored red/auburn back in December 2008

Candid expression ftw~

I first had this red done at the salon, cause it's red I figured I should use some professional advice on it. But after that visit I had been maintaining the color with #45 Bright Auburn from the Revlon line. I find the Revlon color is very similar to what the salon gave me.

So yes... internal debate on that matter. And as if that is not enough I feel like being experimental and trying out Burgundy shades. (#48 Burgundy)
Logically, it's just me being curious because I don't think that I would actually like burgundy shades very much. The color itself isn't bad, it's just I don't think I would like it on me. Here's an example of what I think Burgundy might look on:

Girl on the left. Looking at it, it looks like the color my mom used to have...

So... I don't know about that one. It's kind of a little dark on, though I love the purple-ish hue it has under certain lighting. I can imagine it being a little hard to find a suitable brow product though. The photo here doesn't have as much purple as the Revlon box dye one seems to have. However this color is just a passing thought, I'm still more inclined to the first two colors.

I know a number of you all do prefer my current hair color although it has faded and lightened to a random I don't know what shade anymore. My philosophy is that I will eventually revert to darker shades (maybe even black!) when I get older, so why not try out some lighter shades while I still can. Though I am not talking about Scene hair colors because I kind of hate the maintenance of those.

So let me know which you prefer and what you think about i!. Though that might not entirely influence my final decision as I can get quite spontanous when I am standing in the isle at Watsons. haha. But right now I am quite torn between the first two shades.
If you have any random color suggestions, feel free to elaborate on it too.

Kudos to you if you had read the ENTIRE entry.
Thanks so much for reading and listening to my nonsense!

Disclaimer: Not sponsored by or affiliated with Revlon at all. Though I wish I was, imagine how awesome that would be! Lol. Images (except the one of me) are from google.

The big question... what color do you reckon I go for?

Hm, lilac streak?

By icyabstract · January 22, 2010 · 15 Comments ·

This is a completely random entry. I didn't expect to have anything else to post up today but my experimental side got the best of me - I think.

For some strange unknown reason, I suddenly had the idea of 'coloring' my hair extensions. Or in this case extension, since I only did 1.
Of all colors in the world, I wanted to have a lavender-lilac shade because I thought that would be quite amusing, not to mention pretty (to me).

So I twittered that I felt like compulsive coloring my hair extension with a spot-liter (or hi-liter). You know those things you highlight paper stuf with in school?
Yeap that...

And the end result?

A single purple streak!
Too bad it's not permanent and might (hope not!) wash out in a single wash.

Now wait, I know this is not a right method of coloring your hair. I was just bored and am doing something possibly really strange. But do know that I would not ever think of coloring my natural hair with a spot-liter. I assume it is damaging to your hair.
I am spot-liting an extension which is already dead hair, so it's not so big a deal I guess.

I did color a strand that would not be in contact with my face and I did not color it all the way to the part where it is attached to my hair. Since spot-liters are like toxic and all that. I really wouldn't recommend doing it.. I have no idea why I did it. ha.

I think purple highlights are actually quite pretty but of course not over the whole head, just one streak or two...
Picture this, black hair with lavender highlights (most probably hair extensions since coloring it chemically to get that color isn't worth it).
That would be interesting, but no I am not thinking of getting a do like that right now.

So that sums up this pretty odd experiment of mine. I know, it's not health-safe, probably not at least?
But it was an interesting experiment.

Thank you for reading!

Edit: I washed my hair once and poof! It's all gone.

What Came in the Mail (Lush + Kent Hairbrushes)

By icyabstract · January 14, 2010 · 16 Comments ·

A quick entry on packages I had received today. I'm going to start by saying I didn't pay for the items I am going to feature. One was a gift and the other was sent to me by a company, hence no haul term in the title. Next I am going to try and make this entry snappy because I have to come up with some stuff for class tomorrow and I don't think I have done enough just yet *gulps*

Today was a tiring day of events; no classes, but we had some client meeting with HSBC and some other school stuff. So coming home to these packages was just awesome, I am sure we all experience that same feeling quite often (:

The first package was from Joyce (crystalkiss).

Earlier this week Joyce had mailed me saying that she had purchased Rockstar soap from Lush, sampled it a little and really didn't like the scent of it. Learning from (I think) my recent Lush haul video that I absolutely adore Rockstar soap, she offered to send me the rest of her soap since she didn't use it anyway. That was a super super sweet gesture - thank you so much Joyce!

On top of sending the soap, she had sent me a Chocolate mask as well.
Super excited to try that one out! When I first opened the pack I thought for a moment that she had sent me chocolates because the first thing I saw were the little cube designs.
Thanks again Joyce!
Rockstar makes me happy, I don't know why but it just does. (:

Next item I got in the mail is from Velvut, and they are Kent Brushes.
I had been sent these by Roger Khor, from Velvut. Roger had mentioned that there was no obilgations to review and all, but I thought I would share this. So sharing is my decision, I am not forced or asked to do it (:
For those who didn't read my first entry about Kent Brushes (I'm guessing most have already?) you can click this spot.

Now I know the different company names can get a little confusing but a quick recap. Velvut is the exclusive distributor of Kent Brushes and while Kent Brushes itself is a company and all, in my entries about them, I'll refer to them as a product and Velvut as the company. I hope that made sense. The links in my entries would typically be directed to Velvut's catalog and website, I have explained briefly about Kent Brushes on my first post about them but if you need any additional information you can find it on their main site (which I will not be referencing very often - just this once so click while you can! haha).

Anyway, Kent is said to be more renowned for their hair brushes, so I excited to be able to try some out.

Here's a break down and close up of the brushes for those interested. I haven't used these yet, just briefly brushes through my hair with them so I can't say much about them. But I have provided links to the website if you wish to check out more info about each brush and what it specializes in.

Also, the brushes that I had received were chosen by Roger according to my hair type (I believe he classified it as Long/Thick). Choosing the right brushes will depend on your own hair type, if you have thinner hair, shorter hair etc. I'm including this incase anyone is thinking to get these brushes, just to prevent anyone from buying the wrong type.

What first caught my eye about this brush would have to be the handles! Even the back of the brush (not pictured) is decorated with such designs, so nostalgic.

The next brush was something very very different from any hair brush I have ever owned.
This brush is made from natural bristles and is said to be great for distributing sebum from the scalp to hair tips so that is very interesting indeed! Can't wait to use this one.

CFSL - Pure Natural Bristle Midnight Ruby Large (more info)

Kent is best known for their natural/pure bristle brushes and this one falls under one of their more premium categories.
Here is a closer look at the bristles:

The brush pack itself comes with a brush cleaner and also a manual on how to take care of the brush, washing process and all (manual not pictured).

This next brush might look quite familiar. Mainly because it is the prize for the Kent brushes giveaway that I am currently holding.
Fret not! I didn't steal one of the prizes. Roger was very kind as to send one of them to me for me to sample what I was giving away.

AHGLO1 - For Medium to Long, Thick Hair (more info)

The handle for this brush is incredibly comfortable! And the material is quite unique. It feels rubbery (think NARS) but not like NARS whereby it attracts stuff. I can't describe it but the handle is really nice to hold and touch. You can ask my brother...  I was going around asking my family to touch it.
And random note, I got it in orange, yay~

Last but definitely not least, I was sent the very first hair brush from Kent that I had ever talked about...

ARTH1 - 4 designs (more info)

I got the Cat design!

*squeals* It's so cute!
This was a total random thing and I thought it was really nice of Roger to have noticed me talking about this brush in my first entry and for sending it to me. I am definitely throwing this little baby in my makeup out-and-about pouch. It would be so fun to whip this out in the Ladies.

But anyway, before I get carried away, this was what I received from Velvut.
Again a big thank you to Roger Khor for thinking to send me these!

And also thank you all so very much reading!
Hope you have a great rest of the week. I certainly am not looking forward to mine, I have so much work planned all the way to the weekend and as the weeks go by it's just getting worst.
I shall persevere! (:

I don't have the guts... (hair-related)

By icyabstract · January 5, 2010 · 35 Comments ·

Well not having the guts to do it does not forbid me from discussing it (:

This entry is a ramble on stuff I want to get done to my hair but...
1) I don't have the guts to because I'm not sure how it'll look
2) certain upcoming scenarios/situations (I will elaborate on this).

It's not necessary to sit through this thought process. Just take it that I am thinking aloud and need some valuable opinions to "give me guts" or advise me that the things I want to do are ridiculous.

With the number of hair related entries I post on here you would think I should start doing hair tutorials/videos or something. But truthfully, the only thing I do to my hair is cut/color and, the most recent, plugging in extensions. In terms of styling my hair, I am very safe and boring. I do things people have done countless times so I don't think I am going to be the most original or useful in terms of doing hair tutorials.

But anyway, I had twittered awhile back that I had this sudden desire to chop my hair off.
Don't freak out yet! I'm not going to get a pixie cut or anything, but I have been looking to get a shorter hair style. Though the issue with me is that I feel more comfortable with longer hair and think that shorter hair can look quite off on me sometimes; I also am more prone to bad hair days with shorter hair.
I have had short hair before, sometime in early 2007. Here are some photos from that era to give you guys an idea of how I would look with short hair.

p.s. these photos were from my hair-over-face etc phase, don't judge! haha

And below was what my hair looked like after it grew out of the 'bob' shape pictured above
(had to crop my friends out incase they didn't want to be featured, it is afterall an old photo, lol)

Don't look the most attractive here (ha!) but you get the idea.

I've had the idea of cutting my hair for awhile, but thinking about how long it took me to grow it to this length really makes it hard to just snip it off. I have this nagging feeling I am going to regret it the minute the hair dresser is done and I see my hair in a pile on the floor. At the same time, I'm sick of waiting over an hour for my hair to air-dry (don't like to blow dry my hair, makes it harder to control), feeling super hot out and have my hair stuck in my bag straps. You know what I mean? Yet long hair feels like a safe little place where I can just stay and not worry so much. With shorter hair I feel that if it is not styled, it just looks blah. And since it is short, it tends to stick out and kink more often which results in frequent bad hair days.

This is getting way rambly, but the decisions I had spoken of earlier in this entry would be two upcoming events. The first being Chinese New Year. I don't think I want to get my hair trimmed before then, just incase the new hair-do just doesn't work. So I had thought if I wanted to carry forth this plan I would do if after Chinese New Year. Yet, I am worried about my graduation which is sometime during June. It sounds quite far away, but if I were to trim my hair down quite short, wouldn't I have rather short-ish hair during graduation? I don't know how I'll rock that since with short hair you have to style it and I can't style my hair for graduation - not much at least (damn you graduation cap!)

~sigh, decisions, decisions...

So anyway, the inspiration for mywould-be cut, if I plucked up the courage and reasoned out the scenarios to do it, would have to be Hiroto and Shou (from Alice Nine).

Shou

Hiroto

I would say my choice cut would be more of Hiroto's hairstyle. I prefer the layers and length he has going on, however if I were to cut it this way I am going to leave my bottom layers a little longer. Probably that could help counter my fear of straight out having short hair.
But as mentioned, this means I'll have to spend even longer everyday to style my hair as well. Grr, I don't know... what do you guys think?

And as if this entry isn't long enough, I'm going to ramble on about another thing I am keen to try out but probably might not do.
This time it is in reference to coloring my hair.

I have thought for a long while and have always been curious to get my hair lighter in shade, I'm not talking about a platinum blonde or ash blonde, but possibly more of a dirty blonde? Here are some pictures for reference:

Hurray for Kardashian~

Now I am positive I cannot pull off a dirty blonde look without low-lights (darker streaks, in this case a light brown or medium brown) so my game plan is to use a box dye for a trial? I am not attempting to do this right now since I do wish to wait till I take my extensions out first.
The reason for using a box dye is because most of those stated to give a blonde shade aren't usually strong enough to, so it is quite a safe bet and I could have a little preview of what my hair would look like lighter before deciding if I want to proceed.

Regardless, these are all just some random things I've been thinking to do to my hair.
I am sorry for making you all stick through this ultra rambly post and of course do let me know what you think about any/everything mentioned here.

Should I rock the short hair cut even with the scenarios? Should I try dirty blonde, go back to red or stay with being a brunette?
I'm never good at making decisions on my own so in all truthfulness,
everyone's opinion definitely counts. (:

Thanks for reading!
