LOTD: Dolling up in Neutrals

By icyabstract · July 4, 2011 · 22 Comments ·

It's been awhile since my last neutral LOTD that it almost seems like I don't do neutrals anymore? In fact, I still do them more then ever, it's just that I hardly document them since half of my LOTDs are probably neutrals.

Though it's about time to feature them once more, and this was also the look I did for the My T.A.K. Shop mini photoshoot that I had done.

I started the look fairly typical and tried my hardest not to solely use my Sleek Storm palette. Theoretically that palette on it's own would have been perfect but I wanted to rotate around my stash and use things I've not touched in awhile, such as my LA Girl Platinum shadows.

The look pre-falsies.

The falsies I used was this old pair I found lying around. I'm not even sure where I got this from but I ended up really liking it! The lash band is rather long so I had to trim some of it off and the band is stiff too, but I find I work better with stiffer lashes for now.

Does anyone happen to know where these random brand lashes are from? I'm suspecting something like Daiso, but I could be wrong. If you happen to know, do let me know!

After adding lashes, the neutral look was too blah so using L'oreal HIP's Color Chrome liner in Gold Charge, I drew a gold line just above the lash band.

I didn't have any lip product on in the above shots but after changing into the outfits, I used YSL's Faubourg Peach. Though you can check out the look with my hair down and proper in the My T.A.K. Shop photos.

I rarely wear the false lashes plus colored contacts combo unless it's for a quick thing like photoshoots whereby it's just faster to get decent shots this way. I can't say I feel 100% comfortable in either falsies or colored contacts so wearing both at the same time is not a walk in the park for me.

Give me mascara and my normal lenses any day! But I have to admit I do like the combined effect they give.

Oh and p.s. I was wondering if anyone would like a post about the b2st fan meeting? It's pretty unconventional, yes, but the photos are just sitting in my folders and I feel I need to share it to make the experience more worth while? Else where's the fun in just me viewing them. But only if you guys are interested (:

Though for kicks, here's one shot I took during the encore stage!

LOTD: DHC Pinks (with Canmake falsies & mention of L'oreal Curl Impact)

By icyabstract · May 25, 2011 · 4 Comments ·

Here's a look I had done incorporating the DHC RD05 Eyeshadow Palette, featured here in my post about DHC's Colored Makeup collection.

Though I guess I cheated a little and the whole look did not only compromise of that palette. I wanted to create a look with stronger pink-ish tones and while these DHC palettes are great for a more everyday-styled look, when you want stronger tones you'll have to layer on some cream base products to bring out the colors.

Products Used:

BROW
K-Palette Brow Liner in 02
Canmake Brow Powder in 01
Maquillage Brow Gel in 77

FACE
Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation
Anna Sui Protective Loose Powder (to set)

EYES
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Magical Tannsu Gel Liner in Rose Jelly (find here)
DHC Eyeshadow Palette in RD05
Lumiere Eye Pigment in Flambe (swatch here)
28 Color Palette
K-Palette Liquid Liner in Black
MAC Powerpoint Liner in Engraved
L'oreal Curl Impact Collagene Mascara
Canmake False Lashes in 06

CHEEKS
MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Redhead

LIPS
Revlon Renewist Lipcolor in Perfect Pastel

Highlighted products were provided by companies/distributors, I was not obliged to use/feature them in LOTDs.

Using the gel liner as a cream-colored base before applying the shadows really helped to intensify the pinkish tones in the DHC eyeshadow. Otherwise, from earlier swatches the DHC shadows itself carry a slightly more neutral tone with a wash of pink, for a more subtle look.

  1. Gel liner as a cream-colored base all over the lid
  2. highlight color
  3. Inner-half of the lid
  4. Outer-half of the lid
  5. To intensify the outer corner
  6. Blending from the crease to the brow bone

Digressing a little from DHC a little, I tried on the L'oreal Curl Impact Collagene Mascara (the one that claims to curl your lashes without even using a curler) and I would say I was a little disappointed. Though this is coming from someone who never really took a liking to L'oreal mascaras.

My verdict:
Comparing this to my HG Majolica Majorca mascaras, these were a little on the natural side and didn't actually hold my curls as well. I suppose if I were going somewhere nearby or throwing on a quick look I would use it for the ease of washing it off later, but otherwise I'm not entirely impressed with it and it hasn't converted me to a L'oreal mascara user.

Though mascaras are very personal depending on what you're looking for and how your lashes are like. I might give this a couple more tries as some mascaras are known to get better as the formula 'dries up' a little.

To amp up the look, I decided to try on my Canmake falsies in 06. These are half-strips, not full length and primarily for you to place on the outercorner.

They blend in quite naturally but if you really look you can tell they are there at the outer-corner.

I was initially going to post the DHC Lipgloss lip swatches here but I think this entry is running a little long so that will be in a separate post of its own.

On a side-note, this will be the last LOTD post (in awhile) of me with my long hair!

2nd Round with L'oreal HIP Kohl Liner

By icyabstract · May 12, 2010 · 11 Comments ·

I'm not sure if this is considered a part by part review of this product but here's my second encounter with the L'oreal Kohl Liner.

While I'm fascinated by this product I certainly don't reach for it on a daily basis and rarely even try it out since I haven't mastered it yet. I find it scary to experiment with things like eyeliner just because if it doesn't work right, it completely ruins the look for the day. At least for me...

(if you haven't read about this product, what it does, how to use it etc, I explained it in my first encounter)

Learning from the first attempt, I tapped the heck out of the product on the applicator this time around. It is not advised or recommended to tap product off since that is what you are using to 'draw' on the liner, but I felt that there was way too much product on it the last time and that resulted in nasty fall outs and smudginess.

Here's how the second attempt looked:

Much better! And certainly little to no fall out this time around. I assume that as the product runs low you might not have to tap the applicator clean as excessively. I'm definitely feeling a bit more confident to wearing this out now and testing how it would wear through the day - if it would remain pretty decent and smokey or become smudge-city.

I'll probably try it on a day where I'm not going anywhere important. I have this feeling that this product is just going to smudge and I'll be all panda-eyed, though I sure hope not! As I've said, I love how intense it lines the waterline.

Again, I tried this without my contacts. I'm predicting some slight irritation or initial discomfort if I tried this with contacts on.

Lastly, this product is actually a little hard to remove. I suppose because it puts down quite a pigmented amount of product.

Here's a little comparison:
What I do to remove my makeup is to first wash my face with the L'oreal Elixir Concentrate Makeup Remover and that takes away everything including mascara, foundation and all. It does however leave some eyeliner residue since the oil can't get to those areas. This is how the L'oreal liner compares to my Holy Grail MAC liner after this step.

A bit creepy... I know.

After this I use the Neutrogena Makeup Remover with a q-tip and remove the residue but even so I had to go over the L'oreal Kohl Liner with a bit more effort then the MAC one.

But those are just some things I have noted from the L'oreal HIP Kohl Liner thus far. Will report back about how it wears through the day once I gather enough guts to brave the panda-eye premonition and wear it out.

L'oreal HIP Kohl Liner - Trial Run

By icyabstract · March 10, 2010 · 18 Comments ·

Not an official review of this product (but filed under review, just cause).
In this entry I'll simply be sharing my first encounter and experience with this product.

I got this product from the US thanks to Hazel for letting this hitch a ride to Singapore. As of now, I'm sure it is not available in Singapore ~sorry guys!

Just a recap, the product looks like this and the shade that I have it in is black

Another quick product recap... The inside of this vial basically contains highly pigmented kohl powder. Pure powder, no cream or liquid of any sort. When you remove the applicator, it will look something like this:

It looks almost like a felt tip of a liquid liner, but it's not. It's kohl powder clinging on the 'spongey' applicator.

There are various methods that you can 'apply' this and it all depends on what you prefer. I've held back on trying it because it sounds a little scary to apply dry powder like that straight on your waterline and lashline. We are not talking about a thin liner brush here, it's an applicator dripping with powder.

Nonetheless, I decided to try it out today after I got home and had removed the makeup I wore during the day. I was pretty positive this was not a product I wanted to try just before I head out the house, at least not yet.

As far as application method goes, I used the 'place on water-line, close your eyes, and pull' method.
Yes, text descriptions can only say so much so I found a video demonstrating exactly what I meant, click here.

One thing to note: Don't tug on your under eyes too much, it's not good and will produce wrinkles over time (: I press down on my under eye, so my waterline is a little easier to get to and that's it, no tugging needs to be done actually.

I'll probably do a demonstration video at a later stage, when I actually master it, because right now it looks like this:

Yes fall out~ Inevitable.
And no I did not wear this out for an entire day that caused it to smudge or anything. This was merely 10 minutes after 'applying' it.
I think I have to work around how I apply to reduce the 'smudgy-ness' of it.

All that aside, I LOVE how it applies on both the top and bottom waterline. The intensity is insane too!

Here's how it looks on the top lashline, and I don't have on mascara or any previous liner to distort the effect.

It's a little messy, and I could use with more understanding of the product to work with it better, but so far I'm liking it.

I tried this on after I took my contacts off and I could feel the little specks of powder that got in my eye. It's a normal phenomenal (from what I know), I am just not sure how I would apply this with contacts on. I know you are supposed to wear contacts after you're done with makeup, but I usually wear it before because I don't like fussing with water on my already drawn liner etc.

Edit 10/03: Miwitch found out from this site that you are advised to wear your contacts before makeup. Yay~ Not sure of the source where I got the after makeup information is from but it seems places report differently. Overall, so long as you take care of your contacts and eyes, it should be alright.

I haven't tried wearing it out so I don't know about the lasting power just yet. I will take note and list that in my proper review.

I'll keep you all updated again if I manage to master tightlining with this lovely, but messy, product.
Does anyone have any tips to apply it or experiences to share if you have tried it (either this or the Guerlain one)?

Thank you for reading!

Mixing Loose Eyeshadows (random experiment)

By icyabstract · January 22, 2010 · 16 Comments ·

I was performing this little experiment the other day and it was only nearing the end that I though 'hey! maybe I should document this and post it as an entry.' so that's why everything is more or less already half done.

Long story short, I have been trying my hand at pressing loose mineral eyeshadows (pressing mineral shadows and pigments are quite different) but haven't been very successful at it. I have tried a couple of attempts and even watched Enkore's video on how to press mineral shadows, but at the end of the day I figured it was too much work and it wasn't working out anyway. My pressed shadows would be good for about 1-2 weeks before getting extremely loose and powdery. I know there are decent binders in the market (e.g. Coastal Scent's E-Z press or something like that), but mehhh, forget it. With the trouble and all I'll just stick to using loose mineral shadows... loose!

But anyway, I was clearing out the pan of two 'pressed' eye shadows that have gone loose. I wanted to transfer them back into whichever container they belonged to, but some strange idea struck me to mix them together. The colors I mixed are:

They look funky because some bits of the eyeshadow stuck to the pan. I do still have these colors 'individually', so that's why I went ahead and mixed them with no fear.

My mixing tools are super generic items you can find in the kitchen - coffee stirrirs, nothing fancy.

Here is how the colors look like in the jar after both pigments have been mixed and blended together:

My brother wants me to say that he had taken this photo... HENCE, bad focus (notice how the focus isn't on the spatula with the pigment on it?). hahaha.

And a swatch of the two eyeshadows individually alongside the end result

The photo doesn't capture it as well but it seems that it has almost turned into a dirty mossy green-blue shade with gold reflects. Quite interesting!
It was a fun experiment and I might just mix a couple more in future for the fun of, but it's not something I plan to really keep at doing because I don't have enough little jars to keep it in. And at the same time I don't want so many jars lying around.
I just find it intriguing to be able to blend stuff and create a new color mix, and it's a major plus if the color comes out gorgeous and unique.

You might be wondering, so what am I going to do with the palettes now?
Well, I have plans and I'll post my plans up once I get around to resizing the photos. (:

Thanks for reading!

Collective: Mini Haul and Swap Items!

By icyabstract · October 8, 2009 · 5 Comments ·

Here is a slightly belated collective entry.
I had received the packages just before my trip to Hong Kong but because I was too busy with wrapping up my schoolwork and packing for the trip, I didn't have time to take photos and update it on here.

Regardless I have a bit time of hand these days so I finally got it done.
Lets start out with the mini-haul first.

So it seems that I have been fairly obsessed with purchasing 'second-hand' makeup. Though there must be a seperate term for it. 'Second-hand' just doesn't sound right...
Anyway, so here is the 'second-hand' makeup item that I got.

MAC Fluidline in Macroviolet

It took me awhile to actually purchase it because this is a cream product so I wasn't really sure. I mean, powder product wise it's not a big deal to purchase second-hand, but for cream products it's a little scary in the hygiene department.
So I did check with the seller regarding how she used the product and in the end I just thought whatever, and got it.
Plus, it was a pretty good deal for however much product is in it and the color is gorgeous!
One thing that I would never buy second-hand would be lipglosses. Unless it's the case of a brand new second-hand, you get my drift?

The seller was also kind enough to throw in some freebies.

I haven't tried them all yet, but believe it or, the Buff'd blush in Fruity is an amazing color! It's got a stunning pink irridescent to it.

Moving on, I had also done a swap with Weiduo (owner of Magical Tannsu).
I do feel bad because I didn't send as much, as I sent the package over first.
She was such a doll to send me this many lovely items! So thank you, I do love them all! (:

First up, the brushes!

Top: Smashbox brush, not sure about the one at the bottom but it looks similar to the MAC 214.

Italian Badger flat top brush (don't know the exact names, I just totally made this up, haha).
I have been lemming for a brush like this and boy am I excited to finally own one!

The other makeup items I had received are:

ELF Liquid Lipstick in Cherry Tart

Left: Loose pink eyeshadow, no brand of
Right: Everyday Minerals loose shadow in Golden Medal

ELF Candyshop Lipgloss in Cherry Bomb.
The second one to my ELF tin gloss collection. Can I just mention how incredible these smell. It makes me want to just eat it! haha

NYX Jumbo Pencil in Lemon
My very first NYX Jumbo pencil! Yes, believe it or not.

Revlon Powder blush in Pink Blush

L'oreal Wear Infinite in Brazilian Bronze Duo.
I absolutely love this! I've tried it out a couple of times with different looks and that bronze-rustic shade there is definitely a favorite.

That is it! Since fall is supposedly all about dark and intense lips, lets see if I can break away from nude lips and slap on these gorgeous red lip treats.

On a side-note,
I'm almost done with sorting out the Hong Kong trip stuff, and I'm pretty sure I should be able to get up some updates tonight or at least tomorrow.
Definitely making progress with it! I know it's taking a while, but you guys will see why.

Thank you very much for reading!

1 Item Drugstore Haul

By icyabstract · May 27, 2009 · 4 Comments ·

For the past few weeks, I've been trying to save up my entire life savings (I exaggerate) for 2 up-coming MAC collections that could very well deem me bankrupt. Namely the Style Warriors and Color Craft collection. Thus, that explains the absence in massive haul entries of late.

However, after having abstained from the drugstores for so long, I decided to pop in and have a quick look at some of the products. Especially since I've been hearing several people buzzing about a new Za Product called the Pore Smoother (or something along those lines...). The first thing that I saw when I entered the drugstore was the product in it's glorious stand with the shelf having been ransacked pretty well, leaving only 4 tubs of the product left and a miserably diminished tester. I would say that if I weren't comparing this product to a MAC eyeshadow I could get from Style Warriors, I would definitely snatch it up. But no, I have enough bases and such to last me a lifetime, I didn't need one right now.

Instead, I procdeed to the L'oreal stand and saw this:

L'oreal Touche Magique

This is basically a concealer and illuminator for the under-eye area.
Being the huge concealer and foundation junkie that I was, I apparently couldn't restrain myself from getting this.
This has a brush tip applicator, so you basically twist the product up and brush it on.

I haven't tried this product out yet, but I'm definitely really excited to.
I don't want to harbor high hopes for this product solely because I've tried so many products for the under-eye region and most of 'em don't really do much or just end up caking anyway.

Has anyone else tried this or picked this up?

Tutorial: Neutral Golden Olive (Work-safe)

By icyabstract · April 20, 2009 · 6 Comments ·

Finally!
That's probably what most of you guys are thinking the minute you read the header of this entry.

Yes I know, and I'm sorry I haven't done a tutorial in ages but here you go!
This tutorial was filmed during the period of time that I was having my internship thus the work-safe theme.
Also, while viewing the following pictures of the look you might think 'isn't that a little too dark?' etc, well fret not as in the tutorial video I did mention (or rather suggest) methods to tone it down a little. I personally don't like the au naturale look too much so I tend to overdose on liner and black eyeshadow most of the time, but that's just me.

I always talk too much, here's the link to the tutorial:
VIDEO// Tutorial: Neutral Golden Olive look (using L'oreal Color Minerals)
