Hair: Going waaaay too light

By icyabstract · January 19, 2012 · 14 Comments ·

For the first time in my DIY hair color attempts, I actually washed off the color and went "OH... MY.... GOD..." and that's not a very positive "OMG" either.

I only have myself to blame for being adventurous but the color I used was the other Palty hairdye pictured below, the one on the right.

From my experience with Palty hairdyes, the end result is always somewhat subtle. With that in mind I got ambitious and decided to go ahead with a bleaching shade because I thought, what could happen right? At the very most it would lighten my hair a little but still have it at a caramel brown perhaps?

Like beautiful Natalie Portman here:

but no..... apparently this time arounod the model's hair pictured on the boxdye was pretty darn true to what it would turn out to be.

So here's my hair right now.

Yes... it's gone waaay lighter then I had imagined and the bleach content was stronger then I thought, I left it on for about 20-30 minutes before rinsing.

One reason why I went "OMG" was because of the prevalant gold and yellow tones which I really dislike. Under sunlight it's quite alright, ranging from a strawberry blonde to an auburn but in dimmer lighting or, even worst, ambient lighting it's just.... off.

Under sunlight - strawberry blonde

Under sunlight - auburn-ish

and the dreadful indoors

I'm quite conflicted because while I kinda like how it looks sometimes, it's still leaning 'too orange/yellow/gold' for my liking most of the time. It's a major pet peeve when I see an overly saturated hair color so... I'm sort of commiting that crime myself now.

What's more Chinese New Year is coming... I'm thinking to either re-color it or find a way to tone the brassiness down. Like I said, I'm conflicted and I'm rambling now... I will have to do something this weekend and I'm leaning towards recoloring but who knows.

Oh my poor, poor abused hair.

Moral of the story, yes Palty's blonde/more bleach based shades is pretty close to what the model on the box has. It still boils down to how your hair takes color but my hair was on the darker spectrum before this (not black) and it has lightened loads so.... yeap.

Now... what do you think? How bad is it? Be brutally honest, I can take it!

Thanks for reading (my woes and rant on here and twitter).

Photoshop fun - If I colored my hair blonde...

By icyabstract · December 26, 2010 · 26 Comments ·

Now this 100% just for fun.

I've been debating on color my hair blonde for the longst time ever, but it's not a color I can do on my own (I don't trust myself when it comes to bleaching). When done at salons it costs a hefty sum for hair my length, not to mention the pain of the bleach.

So... I've come to talk myself out of getting blonde hair, though I don't mind a light Milk Tea hair color!

For the fun of it, I roughly photoshopped myself with blonde hair just to see how it would go. The color and all isn't photoshopped perfectly as it can be tricky to turn a brunette blonde and have it still look 'natural', but just a rough idea:

Just for the hell of it, what do you guys honestly think? Not exactly this blonde since it's a bit... bright/ashy/unnatural but you know what I mean. Also, the fear of having the blonde come out too yellow when I color my hair is something I'm thinking about.

Blonde just seems like a troublesome color to get right, yet something interesting to try.

Not to worry I still love auburn but coloring my hair blonde is always in the back of my mind, no matter how much I try to dissuade myself. It's almost as if I'm teling myself I do it at least once in my life, should I?

Hair Files: 'Rogue'-esque Extensions

By icyabstract · December 30, 2009 · 18 Comments ·

I have realized that I seem to update on my hair color and all so much that it might need a little segment of its own. It's cheesy, but heck, I believe I'll be updating on my extensions anyway so might as well make a segment up right now.

I've been twittering about this all day and I have also mentioned this in a past entry, and also a monthly favorite video of mine. It's definitely something I've been wanting to get done for awhile, but due to my schools schedule in the past couple weeks I wasn't able to.
I'm glad I am finally able to get it done today!

I do want to correct myself though. In earlier mentions about getting hair extensions, I had referred to them as 'tie-in's because that was what my friend had back then. Apparently the place that I went to sort of 'clamped' the extension in? It's not the same method and I guess there are a couple methods out there. Also, I didn't get extensions for the length because I got people saying 'your hair is so long already, why get extensions'. Instead I got hair extensions for the highlight factor; The extensions are a light platinum blonde shade - almost white sometimes - which reminded me of Rouge from X-men (dork, I know). I don't claim I look like her or anything! A required disclaimer to ward off the 'You're not Rouge' comments.

I have about 32 bundles of these little guys in my hair. Each 'streak' contains 2 bundles, so as you can see, one bundle isn't very thick. Most of them are situated around the top of my head, while I have 4 streaks on the bottom - 2 on each side.

Here's a close-up of the clamp:

I took a quick shot of how the extensions look with my hair before my camera crapped out on me. I know these babies don't look natural, and that wasn't my intention either. I got them for the fun of and I think it's pretty cool to be able to have ultra blonde extensions seeing as to get my actual hair this color would be equivalent to majorly frying it.

As of now I can't say much of it since I've only had this for lesser then 24 hours?

Thus far the only adventurous thing I've done with them is washing my hair. It definitely is a more tedious process as I have to be careful not to tug at my extensions. Not quite the fear of ripping them off, but instead the slight pain when I tug at them and they pull at my hair. These extensions are said to last about 3 months, depending on how well you take care of it. We'll see how long mine stays in for. The lady who did my hair said I could do everything as per normal such as flat-ironing, washing, etc since this is human hair (scary thought!). I just have to be aware of it, which is something I am trying very hard to do. It would take a bit of getting used to, especially since I'm so used to running my hand through my hair. That's the first habit I need to cut.

I am guessing some people might ask, but I got these done at a 'salon' in Queensway Shopping Centre. It's not a typical hairstyling salon, but they do hair extensions, eyelash extensions, brow trimming that sort of a thing. I am not recommending that particular store simply because there are so many stores that offer this service (Far East especially) and its usually the same thing anyway. Though if anyone really wants to know I can give you the store number. (p.s. Not paid or endorsed for this.)

I don't have a photo of how the extensions look overall, but I'll try to find time and film a video with these tomorrow, to give you all a better 'picture' of it.
Sorry this was a little rambly, I'll update on any mishaps/findings/anything regarding these extensions over the following weeks/months.

Thanks for reading!
