I still think this was part-made for Halloween...

By icyabstract · October 27, 2012 · 3 Comments ·

Fancy a red-ish liquid liner in the mood for Halloween?

While probably not made for the season, KATE Cosmetic's limited edition Super Sharp Liner even comes with a cobweb design, how can you not deny the signs?!

But in all seriousness, this is part of KATE Cosmetic's Autumn Winter 2012 collection and probably not a Halloween release.

It looked too much like an iffy wound line on it's own so here's a star to liven the swatch.

This isn't an official review of any sort, just a random mention incase anyone is on the look out for... perhaps some last minute Halloween materials.

This should be available at Watsons at S$17 (in 2 shades – red & navy).

More on KATE Cosmetic's Autumn Winter 2012 collection in due time!

Happy Halloween if you are thinking to head out with your entourage this long weekend! For me, I'm far too lazy to spend time dressing up so I will gladly settle for dinner and people watch (or twitter watch) all the gorey-ly awesome Halloween get-ups!

On My Nails: Red Shattered Tips

By icyabstract · March 23, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

While a part of me was itching to change my nail color, the other part of me was too caught up with hectic-ness to sit down, scrub off my current manicure and paint a fresh new one. While it's not terribly time consuming, the part where you are waiting for your polish to dry and hoping you don't ram it against something and ruin it is always the scariest.

Even with a super quick drying topcoat, if you are hurriedly sketching ideas and punching keyboard shortcuts... stuff will happen.

So instead of a brand new manicure, I thought to refresh the current one and while this looks even more time consuming, I assure you it's not.

With a little bit of tape and OPI's Red Shatter Polish (thanks Amy!), I have this!

Tape manicures may seem like a huge hassle but in this case it is wasn't much of a mean feat. It doesn't take much to cut a little triangle and I reuse one piece of tape for 2 nails, though you really have to press it down good on use #2.

Shatter polishes also dry real quick, plus if they do chipped or ''poked'... all the more for that shattered effect!

I topped everything with Seche Vite Fast Dry Topcoat after.

Not a very clean cut or uniformed tip and a totally shoddy image overall but I'm cheered by the minor refreshment to my nail color.

Unlike most polishes where you have to hold it upclose to admire it's beauty in all forms of light, I think this is best admired from a considerable distance so you don't see the itsy bitsy flaws.

The Red Shatter reminds me of a rose petal's texture. Now if only I was able to represent an image of a rose on my nails, that would be cool. Nonetheless, I'll most likely be changing this out over the weekends when I get time.

Do you still reach for your shatter polishes?

Hair: Red Red Chinese New Year!

By icyabstract · January 22, 2012 · 16 Comments ·

As I have (discretely?) mentioned on twitter, I am no longer a tamarin monkey! Incase you're wondering what a tamarin monkey is, click here.

I have finally fixed that hairdye job gone wrong but not without much deliberation. I could cut to the chase but that wouldn't be fun and as you know I like rambling so I feel I need to share my internal conflict.

I was torn between finding a way to keep the lightness and go ash or go over that entire color with something else, namely red. The best choice would be going to a salon and telling them what I wanted but the inflated rates and the fact that the salons I frequent were booked out left me with no other choice but another round of home DIY-ing.

I researched loads on how to go ash with off-the-shelf hairdye without ending up with a funky color but in the end, I figured it's too dangerous to experiment again so.... red it is!

I went back to a brand that I have used and trust, Revlon. Though I've not tried their Luminista range so this was a first. Instead of doing a Bright Auburn color, like I had before, I opted to go Red.

Since I had some gold undertones in my hair, I was afraid that the Bright Auburn might end up emphasizing that.

So here's the end result:

Another thing when I was lightening my hair the previous time is that not all the strands ended up being the same lightened shade. Hence, I seem to have various shades of red across my hair, which I kind of like because... it's interesting?

The 'front' and top part of my hair remains a uniformed red while the bottom parts lean towards a more auburn shade with some strands looking like highlights.

The above shots were taken under the muted sunlight we had earlier today.

Indoors, the red kind of tends to look a little brown-ish at times and a little more deep-ruby at others.

It's been awhile since I had used a red dye so I totally forgot how scary it looks washed off. The entire toilet floor looked a deep crimson red and some even got on the walls. It sort of reminded me of my college project but thankfully it all rinsed off and nothing stained (except my towel).

In all, I still like Revlon's dye even though it's a major pain to rinse off but they give sufficient product (enough for me and some for my boyfriend!) and their conditioner smells and feels amazing on.

I'm also glad my hair isn't as dry as hay after all this though it's still best in indulge in some hair masks after the CNY madness has blown over. Speaking of which, I was telling my mom about how I need not wear red for visitings, I'll just let my hair do the talking!

1 Item Nail Haul + Nails (of the moment)

By icyabstract · March 25, 2010 · 11 Comments ·

I got a package in today and I was pretty excited about it because it contained this one item I was super curious about trying out.

It's the Etude House Nail Art Pen. One thing I've realized is that majority black colored items in Etude House's range are under the 'Code B' series? I am not a huge follower of their individual collections but this pen comes in four different shades, white, black, light pink and bright pink. The black one is the only one in a different packaging from the rest.

Oh and I forgot to mention, I bought this from Koreabb because I think she sells Etude House products at a cheaper price then the store. These nail art pens were only S$5.20!

Here's an image from koreabb featuring all the colors:

I was super eager to see how easy these would be to use hence I did a quick and thoughtless design.

This took me lesser then 5 minutes to draw! That's how fast and easy it is.
I guess you could consider this is a mini review. I found that the polish dried real fast and sure my drawing here isn't the best but now I've understood how to 'work' the pen to better my next nail art attempt.

I think this is a pretty neat product to try out if you, like me, can't be too bothered to buy nail brushes and get all artsy like manucurists. This is a lazy and busy person's way to cute looking nails.

After a positive experience with this color I think I might be going back to get the rest of the shades (maybe not bright pink...). Though it's quite sad that as I sit here typing this entry and talking about how I love the black nail art pen, it is currently sold out on her website. But the other colors are in stock.

So that's my little haul, and in case you are wondering this is the nail polish color I have on:

Sally Hanson Diamond Strength in Always Ascher

I would describe this color as the perfect blood red. Both photos of it make it seem lighter then it is but it's surely not a bright-red or a pink-red. I usually try to wear red but I find that bright red shades (be it warm or cool toned) make my hands look pale in comparison. This one however, I love. (:

And that is all! Thank you for reading.
